Anybody interested in haunted places has to make a trip to St. Augustine, Florida. The oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine has had a long and troubled history that has given rise to many different tales of ghosts and other paranormal encounters. Some people call it the most haunted city in America.
Haunted Huguenot Cemetery
1821 was a hard year for the residents of St. Augustine. An epidemic of yellow fever swept the city, killing so many people that the city had to build a whole new cemetery to house them, the Huguenot Cemetery. In very little time people started reporting seeing ghosts haunting it. To this day people see the ghosts of children playing among the gravestones, and a spectral judge walking the paths. Some people claim to have been victims of unearthly pranks, perpetrated by a group of practical jokers who died and were buried together.
The Ghost at the City Gate
One of the victims of the epidemic has taken to haunting the gates of the city where she was buried. To this day residents and visitors alike claim to see a deathly teenaged girl in the area, wearing clothing from the early nineteenth century.
The Old Fort: Nexus to Other Worlds?
The Castillo de San Marco, better known as The Old Fort, is the most haunted place in St. Augustine. As St. Augustine is the most haunted city in America, The Old Fort is arguably the single most haunted place in the country. Built in the seventeenth century, the fortress has seen a great many battles, but has never been conquered. Some of the stalwart defenders of this legendary fort stand guard still, according to witnesses. These ghostly soldiers are said to be viewed most often around sunset and sunrise.
The spirit of a woman in white has often been seen walking the grounds. Many people have seen lights in the watchtower by the road on stormy nights. This might not be considered an unusual occurrence but for the fact that the tower is not wired for electricity. Uncanny mists and fogs that appear only in the fort have been reported. Visitors to the fort’s dungeon tell of chills and sicknesses that overcame them there. Spirit orbs and UFOs have often been seen from The Old Fort’s grounds, and some have been caught on film.
Something creepy is in the air
Children of the Lighthouse
Construction on the St. Augustine lighthouse was not even complete when tragedy struck it. Five children riding on a cart carrying supplies for the construction were thrown into the ocean and drowned. Ever since that day people have claimed to see ghostly children at play all around the lighthouse. A string of subsequent tragedies has led many residents to say that the lighthouse is cursed. The crew from the show Ghost Hunters declared the lighthouse haunted, and that they have video and audio footage of ghosts.
Besides the hauntings listed here, residents know dozens of other sites where ghosts and other strange phenomena have been encountered. The odds of having a spirit encounter in St. Augustine seem to be much higher than most other places in the country. Most of these haunted locations can be seen by members of the public for free, although ghost tours are available throughout the city for those who want them.
