There are hundreds of thousands of ghost stories that have been recorded in various publications and throughout the internet. While many of these stories claim to be true, evidence is usually required in order to dismantle public scepticism. Such evidence can take the form of videos, photographs, audio recordings, multiple witnesses, or official paranormal investigations. There are three real ghost stories that fit this criteria though, and as such, deserve your attention.
The Chelsea Hotel
Located in New York City, the Chelsea Hotel has caught the attention of various artistic individuals since it was first built in 1883. Some of these people met their end while staying in the hotel, two of which are worth noting. In 1953, Dylan Thomas died in Room 206 from alcohol poisoning after binge drinking. Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols is also thought to have stabbed his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in Room 100 after doing drugs in 1978. Given its frightening history, many individuals have claimed to experience paranormal activities while staying at the Chelsea Hotel.
Common complaints amongst most visitors include the sounds of screaming women, sinks randomly running water, and lights turning on and off. In the basement, the Star Lounge frequently experiences power cuts, strange noises, furniture rearranging itself, and objects moving with no logical explanations. Individuals have also claimed to see the spirit of Sid Vicious near the first floor elevator.
Guests staying in Room 206 have seen the face of Dylan Thomas, and have heard loud footsteps coming from outside of the room when no one is actually there. In Room 100, people have experienced a variety of different abnormalities such as seeing spiritual orbs and feeling drastic temperature changes. People nearby have also reported arguing coming from Room 100 and loud music, even though the room is unoccupied.
The South Shields Poltergeist
In December 2005, a variety of different paranormal activities began occurring in the South Shields residence of Marc and Marianne. Living with them was their three year old son, Robert. At first, the paranormal experiences were mild and non-threatening. Doors opened and slammed shut throughout the house, furniture moved and rearranged itself, and objects disappeared and reappeared in other rooms.
As their fear increased though, the paranormal activities began intensifying. One evening, Marc and Marianne went to bed and experienced a significant temperature reduction followed by one of Robert’s toys striking Marianne. A few minutes passed before dozens of his toys were thrown at the couple, who then attempted to keep the covers over them as an unseen entity tried to rip the covers off. Everything abruptly stopped for a moment before severe and painful scratches were inflicted across Marc’s back.
As time passed, the poltergeist began moving Robert from one room to the next and placing him in closets. Frightening threats also appeared on Robert’s whiteboard and Marianne’s cell phone. Although professionals tried to trace the threatening texts, the original source was never found. This prompted paranormal investigators Michael Hallowell and Darren Ritson to conduct an investigation, during which they witnessed the events unfold firsthand as they happened to the family and themselves. In the end, the investigators concluded that the South Shields Poltergeist was indeed legitimate.
The Enfield Poltergeist
In 1977, Margaret Hodgson and her four children moved into a rented house in Enfield. The first unexplainable experience occurred when a chest shuffled towards her and two of her children while they were getting ready for bed. Stranger and more violent activities soon followed. Abnormal noises and knocking followed the family members as they walked around the house and constantly kept them awake during the night. Fires randomly started and stopped, and the family was constantly dodging marble thrown at them by an unseen entity. Perhaps the most frightening event occurred when one of Margaret’s children were thrown out of bed and levitated.
It is interesting to note though that Margaret and her children were not the only ones to witness these events. Numerous individuals such as a priest, medium, reporter, and even police officers witnessed the paranormal activities firsthand. Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair were called to investigate the haunting and recorded more than 2000 unexplained events over just a few months.
Two of these recorded events are worth discussion. One occurred when Maurice saw one of Margaret’s children getting dragged out of her bedroom and down the entire staircase by an invisible spirit. Another happened when Guy heard a loud vibrating noise and searched around the house until he found a Victorian cast-iron fireplace ripped out of a wall. These experiences and others similar, along with the many eyewitness accounts, prompted them to verify that the haunting was real.
Bear in mind that these are just three of the many real ghost stories out there. The Chelsea Hotel has provided many visitors with photographic evidence and abnormal experiences that cannot be accounted for by regular explanations. Both the South Shields Poltergeist and Enfield Poltergeist demonstrated how vicious spirits can be and the value paranormal investigations can have. As such, these stories are considered highly credible by international paranormal followers and believers alike.
